The most comfortable, safe and appropriate outfits for flight travel

By Riddhi Doshi

When I was new to travelling, I didn’t give much thought to what I wore on flight. Until my first trip to the US. I travelled for 24 hours straight in pants that brutally chaffed me. I was so uncomfortable throughout the journey that I still get nightmares of that day.

Thereafter, I have always carefully chosen my flight attire. I have had a few favourites, which I would wear during all my air travels until they tore or I realised that something was amiss. I loved how comfortable a kurta and salwar felt until I realised that my side rib showed while I was trying to store my luggage in the storage space above the seat. The kurta would also sometimes get stuck in my backpack, exposing my salwar, which made me feel awkward.

While there is never a completely ‘awkward-free’ outfit, I keep improvising to bring in more and more comfort to my flight travel. Currently, my go-to outfit is a cotton-blend, 3/4th sleeve co-ord set with loose pants, but not so loose that your skin chafs and a long top with a collar for a more put-together look. This is always paired with a pair of sneakers for shorter flights and closed sandals for longer ones.

So, after a lot of experimentation, I have put together this list of apparel and silhouettes that are most comfortable while flying.

For a comfortable, convenient, and safe flight outfit, it’s essential to focus on breathable fabrics, functional silhouettes, and supportive shoes. Here’s a breakdown of the ideal flight attire and why each element matters, along with Indian brand recommendations.

1. Fabric: Breathable and Stretchable

Why? Flights often involve long hours in confined spaces, so choosing fabrics that are breathable, stretchable, and wrinkle-resistant is crucial. Fabrics that wick away moisture also help maintain comfort at varying temperatures during flights. But don’t opt for Yoga pants, like many people do. These are made of synthetic fabrics and could be a fire hazard on an aeroplane. Also, definitely do not opt for denim. They are environment unfriendly and hazardous for skin as well.

Recommended Fabrics:

Cotton-blend with Lycra: Allows stretch and comfort without looking sloppy. But if you can, go for 100% cotton fabrics.
Bamboo Fabric: Naturally breathable and moisture-wicking.
Modal or Tencel: Soft, lightweight, and sustainable options that feel good against the skin.
Linen and soft jude: These are highly breathable and very lightweight, but linen easily wrinkles. So, if you do not have to run straight to work from your destination airport, linen could be a great choice.

Indian Brands:

Nicobar: Offers relaxed-fit clothing made from organic cotton and natural fibres.

The Summer House: Known for sustainable clothing made from natural fabrics like Tencel and organic cotton.

2. Silhouette: Relaxed but Structured

Why? A loose but well-structured silhouette,  preferably full pants and tops with long sleeves ensures freedom of movement plus saves you from the dirt and germs deposited on flight seats. Let’s face it, thousands of people must have sat on the seat you have. Yes, the airlines cleans their seats and carpets, but do they also sanitise the handles and seat belts after every flight? I doubt it. Hence, its best to ensure that your skin’s direct contact with the seat is minimal.

Suggested Silhouettes:

Loose Jumpsuit: Offers flexibility and style in one piece while making airport restroom trips easier.
Relaxed-fit Trousers with a Soft Top: Comfortable yet stylish for long sitting periods.
Loose co-ord sets: Co-ords are all the rage currently and are available in different cuts and comfortable fabrics. I personally am also comfortable in knee-length kurtas without side slits and salwars.
Layering with a Light Jacket or Shawl: Airplanes can get cold, so a lightweight jacket or shawl is essential for warmth without bulk.

Indian Brands:

Bunaai: Their cotton and linen jumpsuits are chic and perfect for travel.

Indigene: Specializes in comfortable, airy trousers and easy-to-layer pieces like scarves and jackets.

Okhai: It has good co-ord sets and salwar-kurta sets that are hand-made.

3. Shoes: Slip-on with Arch Support

Why? Easy-to-remove shoes are ideal for airport security checks. Good arch support helps reduce foot fatigue during long walks in airports, while closed-toe shoes ensure safety in crowded spaces.

Recommended Shoes:

Sneakers or Slip-on Loafers: Provide both support and comfort.
Comfortable Flats with Cushioning: Perfect for shorter flights but ensure they have a sturdy sole.

Indian Brands:

Neemans: Offers sustainable and vegan slip-on sandals and loafers that are stylish and easy to wear, and sneakers.

The Sole Sisters: Known for their comfortable, cushioned shoes with great support.

4. Accessories: Minimal but Functional

Compression Socks: Prevent swelling and promote blood circulation during long flights.

A Large Tote or Backpack: Opt for one that can carry essentials, including a water bottle, snacks, and travel documents. My picks is a backpack, so, my hands are free while walking around the airport.

Indian Brands:

The Strokes Gallery: Offers large tote bags that are eco-friendly and stylish.

Chumbak: Their colorful and functional backpacks are perfect for travel.
