East meets West in Good Earth’s amazing 25th anniversary collection Bosporous

The unveiling of Good Earth’s annual design collection is a much-awaited event every year. This year’s launch ‘Bosporus’ is particularly special, celebrating 25 years of homegrown luxury and lifestyle brand.
Two years in the making, the Bosporus Design Collection is a true voyage of discovery and marks the beginning of a new design journey for Good Earth. Born from a collective fantastical imagination, the collection imagines the cultural motifs, colours and patterns connecting Europe with Asia through a legendary waterway.

Good Earth’s Creative Director Anita Lal has reimagined varying influences of ancient Greek, Roman, Coptic, Persian, Byzantine, Ottoman, Safavid and Mughal in this collection. Speaking about the collection, Lal says, “For our silver anniversary, I decided to shift our gaze westwards and when I thought about what connects Western cultural influences with the Eastern world, the storied legacy of the Bosporus strait was an obvious choice”.

To mark the 25th year, Good Earth’s stores in Mumbai’s Raghuvanshi Mills and Delhi’s Khan Market were reopened after a renovation break. The redesigned stores serve ‘Bosporus’ as a beautifully curated, multi-sensory immersive experience.
“Byzantines were great traders. They opened trade routes throughout Asia and developed extensive trading relationships with the Middle East and the Orient, including India and China. This fascinating mix of East and West is the design theme of Bosporus,” adds Lal.

A number of elements from specific design languages have informed the prints, patterns, motifs, colours, textures and forms in ‘Bosporus’. Think Byzantium tile mosaics from Palermo; oleanders, lemons, orange blossoms, ivy, cypress and olive trees from Tuscany and Venetian masquerades. Good Earth’s much-loved cheetah motif also returns alongside other flora and fauna, in particular pomegranates and tulips.
The 25th-anniversary celebrations kick off with the launch of a charming fine bone china dining collection. Pomegranates and roses adorn the exquisitely detailed lineup of plates and bowls in a range of sizes and combinations.

Another line is inspired by the Ottoman çintamani motif (characterised by three dots to form a triangle), with a cluster of three pearls recreated as gold and silver brocade patterns on handmade stoneware ceramics. The Imperial Blue line draws from classic blue and white porcelain from the Ming dynasty, which used to be widely exported and especially valued in the Imperial Ottoman court.

The bedding line, complete with fine quilts and cushions, a bedcover and curtains and embroidered sheers to match, is inspired by a scene each from the day and night. Bosporus Rosa, the daytime collection, features hand-block printed cheetahs intertwined with roses and lush green palms. The hand-drawn toilet inspired by classical Greek and Roman art is designed with festoons ribbons, fruits and flowers.

The night-inspired Scherezade is inspired by the legendary storyteller and a fantastical, enchanted night sky. Cheetahs and roses basking in the moonlight along the Bosporus. The toilet has been digitally printed on cotton and quilted in the French boutis style in the Ottoman colour, ‘guvezi’ which is closest to dark crimson.
There is also a range of hand-embroidered and hand-embellished cushions in silk and velvet, featuring motifs of tulips, carnations, hyacinth, date palms, cypresses, crescent moon and fruits like pomegranates, artichokes and pineapples.
